Fiche de révision · Anglais 4eLes phrases exclamatives : What a…! How…! (discovering New York)

3e trimestre · chapitre 13 sur 13

Les exclamatives en What et How permettent d'exprimer ses émotions et ses impressions, par exemple en découvrant New York.

L'essentiel à retenir

  • What a / an + adjectif + nom singulier
  • What + nom pluriel ou indénombrable
  • How + adjectif ou adverbe
  • Ordre affirmatif après How : How big it is!
  • New York : Manhattan, the Big Apple

La leçon

1. What a / an + nom singulier

L'article ne s'oublie jamais : What a nice day!

What a / an + (adjectif) + nom singulier !

Exemple

What a view! What an amazing city! (Quelle vue ! Quelle ville incroyable !)

2. What + nom pluriel ou indénombrable

Exemple

What tall buildings! What awful weather! (Quels grands immeubles ! Quel temps affreux !)

3. How + adjectif ou adverbe

How s'emploie devant un adjectif (How beautiful!) ou un adverbe (How fast he runs!), sans nom.

Exemple

How big this park is! How noisy it is! (Comme ce parc est grand ! Comme c'est bruyant !)

4. Exprimer ses impressions et ses émotions

Adjectifs d'impression : amazing, impressive, huge, crowded (bondé), noisy, breathtaking (à couper le souffle), wonderful, scary. Pour un sentiment, on emploie l'adjectif en -ed pour la personne (I was amazed, impressed, scared) et en -ing pour ce qui le provoque (It was exciting).

Exemple

I was amazed by the view from the Empire State Building. It was breathtaking!

Vocabulaire : a skyscraper (gratte-ciel), a yellow cab (taxi jaune), the subway (métro), a block (pâté de maisons), downtown.

Exemple

We took the subway to Times Square. What huge screens!

Comment choisir entre What et How

  1. Regarde s'il y a un nom : avec un nom, emploie What ; sans nom, How + adjectif ou adverbe.
  2. Avec What, regarde le nom : singulier dénombrable → What a / an ; pluriel ou indénombrable → What sans article.
  3. Choisis a ou an selon le son du mot qui suit : What an amazing city!
  4. Avec How, si la phrase continue, garde l'ordre sujet + verbe : How big this park is!

Pièges à éviter

  • N'oublie pas a / an devant un nom singulier dénombrable : What a nice day!, pas What nice day!
  • Pas d'article avec un nom indénombrable : What awful weather!, jamais What a weather!
  • Pas d'inversion après How + adjectif : How big this park is!, sinon c'est une question (How big is this park?).
